Graduate Student Support

Biological Sciences graduate students in good standing may receive teaching assistantships during their first four semesters in our graduate program. After that point, and during their first summer, it is expected that all faculty with external funding will support all of their graduate students until they graduate.

Exceptions

If a faculty member loses his or her research funding, all senior (past their second year) students in good standing will receive teaching assistantships until such time as the faculty member regains funding or the student(s) graduate.

Except in cases of grant-failure "safety net", tenured faculty without grant funding, but who are actively seeking grant funding, are allowed to have no more than one departmentally-supported Ph.D. student.

Pre-tenure faculty members who are without grant funding but who are actively seeking grant funding are allowed to have no more than two departmentally-supported Ph.D. students. One of these students can be from EEB, Neuroscience, or IGPBS. As with tenured faculty, pre-tenure faculty who have sufficient funding are expected to support all of their senior students and all junior students who are not in the Biological Sciences graduate program.

Departmental support is not available for students of research-track and adjunct faculty. Research-track and adjunct faculty are expected to support their graduate students immediately upon accepting them into their labs. If funding should fail for a research/adjunct faculty member, s/he may request support for his/her senior Biological Sciences graduate students. If it is available, support will be granted.

The department of Biological Sciences offers a variety of financial support opportunities through Fellowships, PhD Stipends, and TA ships

  • Fellowships: Several prestigious fellowships are awarded every year to exceptional graduate students.
For more information regarding specific Graduate Research Fellowships, please contact Dr. Paul Gollnick at gollnick@buffalo.edu.

  • Ph.D. Stipends: All Ph.D. students receive a combination of teaching/research assistantships and fellowships, a full tuition waiver, and health insurance. For 2008/2009, the base stipend is $22,000, with additional funds that compensate tuition and insurance.
There are also several fellowships available that supplement the base stipend. In 2008/2009, these fellowships were $28,000, not including tuition waiver & insurance. These fellowships are available to both domestic and international applicants. They are awarded based on grade point average and GRE scores. Applications must be received by February 1 to be considered for these fellowships.

  • TA Ships: Teaching experience is typically gained through teaching assistantships (TAships) that provide support until students have entered their thesis laboratories.
For more information regarding Graduate Teaching Assistantships, please contact Dr. Paul Gollnick at gollnick@buffalo.edu.
